more....to keep or not to keep....

As I told everyone yesterday, I'm considering tossing our armoire/wardrobe that is giant sized and bulky and huge.

Here are some pics of the monster I've been lugging around for the past 9 years.

What do you think? Is it worthy of a paint job that I talked about here yesterday?

Its a monster cabinet for sure.. and you can probably store lots of stuff in it!!!

Yeah.. do a paint job... It seems to be old.. but in rather good condition..

Cant wait to see the painted cabinet!!

I would definitely keep that, I think it's great, it could really be turned into a fun piece.

I'm not crazy about the huge mirror panel. What if you replaced the mirror with fun wallpaper?

I've seen door panels decorated patchwork-style with swatches of vintage wallpapers. That would be cool in a child's room, I think. I don't know if lead would be an issue with old wallpapers, though.

Does it have shelves?

unfortunately, there are no shelves, just a rod to hang clothes. I've used it for off-season stuff in the past, but now I think we'd really be using it to store stuff in general...you know, that 60 pack of paper towel, or all the toys and baby stuff i'm sure we're going to collect over the next year or 2. :-)

I think you can easily add shelves to this piece if you want to maximize the storage space. but not absolutely necessary. It's def a keeper. you can't find enough hiding spots for baby stuff.. I could use something like that for my fold away playpen.. and about 100 other kids "stuff" that i stare at every day.

Will be fun to see the finished product.

Keep keep keep! Paint it and get rid of the mirror and cover with some cool pattern or something - or even chalkboard paint in a cool color would be fun in the mirror spot! I'd use it to put shelves in for shoes - you can never have enough space for shoes!

Hmmm I don't know. It seems like a unique piece of furniture, which might make it neat if you painted it. (Although I don't know how I feel about red.)

On the other hand, if you're running out of room, I'm sure there's someone out there who would love to have it. If you don't need it, you could bless someone else.

Don't chuck it out!! sand it down and paint it WHITE with matt eggshell paint and it would be gorgeous!!

my personal philosophy about furniture & household goods is: easy come, easy go. if an object does not have sentimental value, can be replaced later, and is currently cramping my living space i put it back into circulation for someone else's use. i should say that i mostly buy (or find when i'm lucky) used things so i don't feel like i'm being wasteful when i add to and exfoliate my apt. editing can breathe new air into a room. that said, i love to revamp pieces with paint, wallpaper, etc. my only criteria for undertaking such a project is whether the piece is unique, and has good bones or shape. this cabinet looks like it was well-built, and would look great and no longer intrusive with a fresh coat of white or maybe sea foam paint, but it sounds to me like it feels too bulky in your space, in which case i suggest putting it back into circulation for someone else.

i really enjoy reading your blog!

I also think adding shelves would make sense.
(really not hard to do).
You could remove the door altogether.
Since it is quite deep I would then use baskets on the shelves so things are more accessible.

You could add a fun cornice header on top so it's not so boxy looking. For a child's room this touch of light whimsy would work.

The color I would say depends on the style of room. I like the idea of white as well. Red could be great too but be warned... the red pigment requires many, many coats to make it look opaque. Think 5 coats...

the door doesn't exactly close properly anyways, so removing this is definately an option. i've also thought to just put a simple curtain accross the top, for easy access. The sides and back of the armoire are really thin OLD particle board, so the only way shelves would hold up were if I retrofitted the interior with more wood. too much work I think.

still undecided....i have 2 more weeks to make up my mind!

I say keep it (unless you're dying to get rid of it, then let someone else have it ;). Sand it down, paint it a shiny red. You could wallpaper the insides so it's pretty and nice. What if you put in organizing bins / stackable shelves instead of building shelves in there if it doesn't fit? Something from Ikea or an organizational store? You could put graphics or decals on the outside of the cabinet...endless options. Good luck with your baby :)

It's great, I think it's very cool and vintage, a cream or coppery green would look so perfect! Maybe just placing hooks inside would make it functional for coats or something.
